Protecting Our Source Water

Several issues illustrate the importance of protecting our water. In particular, increasing source water protection awareness is necessary. Statistics show that 3.4 million people die each year from water-related diseases. Another 780 million people have no access to clean water. Children, the elderly and sick are more susceptible to these issues, but it is not limited to them. With industrialization, advances in medical technology, the use of more chemical compounds combined with the lack of environmental laws prior to the 1970s, water sources have suffered by being exposed to many types of contamination. As operators, it is a great responsibility to treat the water, but protecting the source water can be very beneficial in its long-term quality. The following link (provided by the Groundwater Protection Council) gives some insight into what local communities and operators can contribute toward the protection of source waters.
